What Is 22K Gold?

22K gold is 22 parts gold to 2 parts other metals, usually copper and silver. That works out to 91.6% pure, which is why it's stamped 916. The small amount of alloy makes it hard enough to hold detailed designs while keeping the deep yellow colour Pakistani buyers expect.

This is the karat behind most bridal jewellery in Pakistan: necklaces, bangles, jhumkay and full wedding sets. When a jeweller quotes you a price, it is usually today's 22K rate multiplied by the weight, plus making charges (kapaat) for the workmanship.

When you sell 22K jewellery back, the dealer pays for the gold content at the day's rate and usually deducts a few percent for melting and impurity. The making charges you paid are not refunded. So for pure savings 24K holds value better, but for jewellery you'll wear, 22K is the best balance of value and durability.

What 22K Gold Is Best For

  • Bridal and wedding jewellery sets
  • Traditional designs: bangles, necklaces, jhumkay
  • Jewellery you want to keep its value
  • Gifts for weddings and Eid

How the 22K Rate Is Calculated

The daily benchmark announced by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) is a 24K per-tola rate, built from the international gold price and the USD-PKR exchange rate. 22K is priced as 22/24 of it, because 91.6% of a 22K piece is pure gold.

Today: Rs 410,000 (24K per tola) × 22/24 = Rs 375,833 per tola

One tola is 11.664 grams, the standard weight in Pakistan's sarafa bazaars. Read more in our guide to traditional gold weights in Pakistan.

Tips for Buying 22K Gold in Pakistan

  • Ask the jeweller to show the gold rate, weight and making charges separately, so you can compare shops properly.
  • Not everything sold as 22K is 22K. Get the piece tested on a karat-testing (XRF) machine, which most bazaars have.
  • Look for a 916 or 22K stamp, and ask for a receipt stating purity and weight.
  • Ask about the buyback deduction before you buy. It varies between shops.
