About the US Dollar Rate in Pakistan

The US dollar is the most important foreign currency in Pakistan. Imports, oil purchases, external debt payments and the IMF programme are all settled in dollars, so the dollar rate is the single number that tells you how the rupee is doing. When people in Pakistan say "the rate", they almost always mean the dollar.

The open market dollar rate shown here is what exchange companies pay when you sell them US dollars in cash. It usually sits slightly above the interbank rate that banks use for trade and remittances, because cash dollars are in higher demand for travel, education fees and savings.

About This Rate

The dollar rate on this page is the open market buying rate — what a licensed exchange company in Pakistan pays when you sell US Dollars in cash. If you are buying US Dollars, expect a slightly higher selling rate at the counter. Banks use the interbank rate for transfers, which is usually a little lower than the open market rate.

Rates are updated once a day at around 12:05 pm Pakistan time. See all currency rates in Pakistan, or check how the exchange rate feeds into today's gold rate in Pakistan.

FAQ

How much is 100 US Dollars in Pakistani rupees?

At today's open market rate, 100 USD is Rs 27,790.00 and 1,000 USD is Rs 277,900.00.

How many US Dollars can I get for 10,000 rupees?

At today's open market rate, Rs 10,000 converts to about 35.98 USD. Exchange companies sell currency at a slightly higher selling rate, so you will receive a little less when buying.

Why does the dollar rate matter so much in Pakistan?

Pakistan imports most of its fuel, machinery and many food items, and pays for them in dollars. A higher dollar rate makes these imports more expensive, which feeds into petrol prices, electricity tariffs and general inflation. It also directly raises the local gold price, since gold is priced internationally in dollars.

Who controls the dollar rate in Pakistan?

Pakistan has a market-based exchange rate: the interbank rate is set by supply and demand between banks, with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) able to intervene to smooth sharp moves. The open market rate is set by licensed exchange companies and generally tracks the interbank rate closely.

Rates are indicative open market buying rates and are provided for information only. Exchange companies may quote different rates; confirm the final rate before any transaction.
