The gold rate in Pakistan fell Rs1,700 to Rs421,000 per tola today, as international gold slipped after the US Federal Reserve held interest rates and signalled no hurry to cut.

The gold rate in Pakistan fell today. The Sarafa association's rate for 24K gold dropped by Rs1,700, or 0.40%, to Rs421,000 per tola, down from Rs422,700 on Wednesday. The fall follows a decline in the international price overnight.

What Moved Gold

The main driver was the US Federal Reserve. On Wednesday the Fed kept its key interest rate unchanged at 3.75%–4%, as markets expected, but two officials dissented in favour of a rate rise, according to CNN and CNBC. The Fed's statement said inflation "remains elevated", and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh stressed the strength of the US economy while declining to give guidance on future moves.

That message weighed on gold, which pays no interest and tends to lose appeal when rates are expected to stay high. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose to about 5.02% after the decision. Gold had swung during Wednesday's session, and traders sold in Asian trading on Thursday as the prospect of rate cuts looked more distant. Analysts said upcoming US inflation data could set the next direction.
