Gold Rates in Pakistan Steady Near Rs454,000 as Cooling US Inflation Keeps Global Gold Above $4,350

Gold rates in Pakistan added a modest gain over the past week, rising about Rs4,200 per tola to settle near Rs454,000, as the international market consolidated the previous week's sharp rally. A run of softer US inflation and consumer data pushed expectations of a September Federal Reserve rate hike sharply lower, keeping gold well supported without producing another dramatic leg higher.

How the Week Unfolded

International gold entered the week on a strong footing. December futures opened at $4,400 per troy ounce on Monday — the highest opening level since early June — after the previous Friday's disappointing US employment report led analysts to scale back rate-hike expectations. With US-Iran negotiations quiet, attention turned to two inflation reports due mid-week.

Wednesday's consumer price data delivered the week's main catalyst. Headline inflation held at 3.4 percent year on year with core CPI easing to 2.5 percent, and gold rallied on the print. The metal opened above $4,400 for a fourth consecutive session on Thursday, with December futures at $4,468.80.

Thursday's producer price report was more mixed. Headline producer prices came in flat, but the measure excluding food, energy and trade services rose 0.4 percent month on month — suggesting some underlying pressure persists even as the headline number cooled. Gold gave back part of its mid-week advance, and by early Asian trading on Friday it had slipped below $4,400 on profit-taking, dipping under $4,350 at one point.

Friday's US data turned the tone again. Retail sales fell 0.6 percent against expectations of a 0.1 percent increase, and the University of Michigan's preliminary August consumer sentiment index dropped to 51.0 from 55.2. Spot gold recovered to around $4,373.50, up 0.53 percent on the session. The combination of weak retail sales, cooler CPI and flat headline PPI pushed the market-implied probability of a September Fed hike down to roughly 29 percent, from about 34 percent the previous evening.

Across the five sessions the metal traded in a band between roughly $4,325 and $4,425, holding on to most of the prior week's gains. By Monday, gold had edged back toward $4,400, rising 0.45 percent to about $4,395 as subdued US data continued to reduce the case for an imminent hike.

Gold Rates in Pakistan This Week

Local closing rates for 24-karat gold per tola moved as follows:

  • Monday, 10 August: Rs447,500
  • Tuesday, 11 August: Rs453,300
  • Wednesday, 12 August: Rs455,000
  • Thursday, 13 August: Rs454,000
  • Friday, 14 August: Rs454,000
  • Saturday, 15 August: Rs453,700
  • Monday, 17 August: Rs453,700

The shape of the week is worth noting. Local rates opened with a Rs2,000 dip on Monday, then jumped Rs5,800 on Tuesday and a further Rs1,700 on Wednesday to reach the week's peak of Rs455,000. From there the market simply went quiet: a Rs1,000 easing on Thursday, no change on Friday, and a Rs300 slip on Saturday that has held into Monday. Four of the week's sessions moved by Rs1,000 or less.

That leaves the 1 tola gold price in Pakistan at Rs453,700, up roughly Rs4,200 — about 0.9 percent — from the previous Saturday's Rs449,500. Per 10 grams, 24-karat gold works out to approximately Rs389,000.

After the previous week's near-Rs21,000 surge, this was a period of consolidation rather than direction. For anyone tracking the live gold rate in Pakistan, the practical takeaway is that the local benchmark has settled into a narrow band around Rs454,000 and has not tested either side of it for several sessions.

Outlook

Two scheduled events dominate the week ahead. The minutes from the Fed's July meeting are due Wednesday, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at the Jackson Hole symposium — both will be read closely for signals on September. With hike odds already down to roughly one in three, a hawkish surprise from either has more room to move the market than a dovish one.

Geopolitics remains a live variable, though its effect has been muted lately. Israel launched fresh strikes on Lebanon over the weekend and President Trump is preparing new economic sanctions on Iran, but crude continues to move through the Strait of Hormuz in volume, keeping oil prices — and with them the inflation channel that drove July's selloff — largely in check.

For local buyers, the flat finish to the week means prices are neither running away nor retreating. Given how quickly the picture changed in the first week of August, checking the live gold rate in Pakistan on the day of purchase remains worthwhile.
