Gold rates in Pakistan finished the past week almost exactly where they began, edging up Rs500 per tola to Rs437,500. It was the calmest week the local market has seen in two months, with the rate confined to a range of just Rs3,500 — a marked change from August and September, when single sessions regularly moved by more than that.
How the Week Unfolded
International gold entered the week on the back foot, trading around $4,138 an ounce on Monday near a two-month low. The metal had lost roughly 6 percent over the previous month, and the pressure came mainly from the currency and bond markets rather than from anything specific to gold.
Tuesday and Wednesday brought more of the same. The dollar index held near 102, strengthened less by American optimism than by a weaker euro, as fiscal and political concerns in France and Spain weighed on the single currency. US Treasury yields, meanwhile, pushed toward 24-year highs. Both are headwinds for a non-yielding asset, and they kept gold subdued even though softer US jobs data had already trimmed expectations of an October rate rise.
The mood shifted on Thursday. Treasury yields retreated from their highs after a 30-year bond auction drew strong demand — a signal that investors remain willing to hold long-dated government debt despite the recent selloff. Oil prices fell as well, after President Trump said Washington was engaged in productive discussions with Iran and would hold off on any attack before next month's midterm elections. That came despite Iran stepping up attacks on tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz during the week, and a hurricane disrupting offshore production in the Gulf of Mexico. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem struck a hawkish note the same day, saying further tightening may be needed to return inflation to the 2 percent target, though he declined to signal how he would vote later this month.
Friday extended the recovery. Gold climbed more than 1 percent to around $4,180 an ounce, a one-week high and its second consecutive session of gains, as the softer dollar and retreating oil prices outweighed the prospect of more Fed tightening. Traders were pricing less than a 20 percent chance of a rate hike in October, but more than an 80 percent probability of at least one quarter-point increase by December. Silver lagged, slipping toward $60.60 and down roughly 4 percent over the month.
Gold Rates in Pakistan This Week
Local closing rates for 24-karat gold per tola moved as follows:
- Monday, 5 October: Rs438,000
- Tuesday, 6 October: Rs436,000
- Wednesday, 7 October: Rs435,100
- Thursday, 8 October: Rs434,500
- Friday, 9 October: Rs436,500
- Saturday, 10 October: Rs437,500
The local rate tracked the international pattern closely this week — unusually closely, in fact. It eased through Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as the dollar and yields pressured gold, bottoming at Rs434,500 on Thursday, then recovered Rs2,000 on Friday and Rs1,000 on Saturday as the global rally took hold. There was no timing lag to explain and no divergence between the two markets.
That leaves the 1 tola gold price in Pakistan at Rs437,500, up Rs500 — about 0.1 percent — from the previous Saturday's Rs437,000. Per 10 grams, 24-karat gold works out to approximately Rs375,100. The rate opened Monday this week at Rs436,000.
The Fortnight in Context
Readers following these updates should note that the week before this one saw a larger move. Between Saturday 26 September and Saturday 3 October, the local rate fell from Rs447,700 to Rs437,000, a decline of Rs10,700 or 2.4 percent, with most of it arriving in a single Rs9,700 drop on Monday 28 September. That slide came as international gold fell below $4,200 to its weakest level since early August, pressured by rising oil prices and Treasury yields reviving inflation fears.
Gold then rebounded on Friday 2 October after the September US employment report showed just 29,000 jobs added against the 90,000 expected. The probability of an October Fed hike collapsed to around 14 percent from roughly 70 percent earlier that week, and spot gold jumped more than 1 percent to about $4,223.
Taken together, the past two weeks have seen the local rate fall Rs10,200, or 2.3 percent. For anyone tracking the live gold rate in Pakistan, the wider picture is that October has been quiet so far — the rate stands Rs2,900 below its 1 October level — while the market sits 9.6 percent below the 26 August peak of Rs484,000 and about 2 percent above where it began August.
Worth noting alongside the recent declines: gold still gained roughly 4 percent over the third quarter as a whole, despite falling nearly 7 percent in September, supported by continued central bank buying, ETF inflows and geopolitical risk.
Outlook
US inflation figures due this week are the main scheduled event, and they land ahead of the Federal Reserve's meeting later in October. With markets already pricing only a modest chance of a hike this month but a strong likelihood of one by December, the data will mostly shape the timing question rather than the direction.
Energy remains the swing factor, as it has been since July. Oil fell at the start of this week on hopes that Russian diesel supplies could ease global fuel shortages, after President Trump said an agreement had been reached for Russia to supply several hundred thousand tons of diesel and claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. Pulling the other way, Iran-backed Houthi militants targeted Saudi Arabia's main airport again on Sunday, a day after a strike that killed 12 people and injured more than 300, prompting Trump to consider joining Saudi retaliatory action in Yemen.
For local buyers, the rate has been stable for a full week after two months of frequent large moves. With an inflation release and an unsettled energy picture ahead, checking the live gold rate in Pakistan on the day of purchase is still worthwhile.
